Exercise 1

I wanted to stick with the green color to match the photography. The dotted lines will be seen throughout the magazine. Its a secondary element I want to incorporate in all spreads.

  1. The green is overwhelming, please choose a green that actually exists in the photo... a lighter, less vibrant color... so it doesn't get in the way of readability.

I think you need imagery in your layouts - for almost any audience.

Grid A appears the best layout of the 3, in my opinion because it has less problematic issues and more design development with its image and it's block of color behind the 2nd article.

Please pay attention to the details of alignment, and use your negative space more wisely. For instance: you need to equalize the columns in the first article so the negative space above the green shape is consistent from left to right across the page. Look at the column "ends" of the second article as well, and even them out. No widows and orphans!

The addition of the dotted line adds interest, and youth, to the page. As long as it doesn't "crowd" the text (as it does in #2 design) this could be a successful unifying element through out the magazine. But, please don't rely on it too much... it will get old quickly. Find other ways to use it, other colors, and in other situations if we are to see it repeatedly.

    Good beginning.
