Interesting Take on Covers…Quite Coincidential!

Hey guys, check out this fascinating article from Gizmodo on the recent covers for Bloomburg Businessweek! Overall, some of the covers are too "amateur", but then there's some like the one below that are just absolutely breathtaking! Check out the article, and also be free to to check our printed copies of the magazine at the NEiA Library!

Special thanks to Librarian, Damien McCaffrey for posting this article on the
college SGA group via Facebook!

EXERCISE_3

I wanted my covers to be colorful and fun. I wanted show the taste of simple fresh food, using bold typography and different placement of layouts.

Cover Designs

Here are my designs. I tried to use foods that were not so average and recognizable to people. I thought images of food on the white background would help highlight it and immediately show the audience what the magazine is about even if they take a glance at it.

I tried to keep the colors consistent as well as the typefaces with the layouts I've been creating.

Exercise 3: COVERS

My magazine's target audience is trendy younger adults between 21-30 interested in our environment and what we are doing to sustain and advance it. I wanted it to be fun and interesting when designing the logo. Something that could work with the audience, but keep with the idea of the magazine which is focused on the environment. I imagine a college kid, going to school in the city and maybe being a little bit of a hipster. So I thought about this when choosing type, colors and images. I kept the issue title large and white to make that first within the hierarchy of each design.

Covers - Tobias

I went for a different approach for each of these covers. The first is straightforward to the idea of food and the green color that is associated with it. The image stands secondary to the dominant text. I mimicked the vertical movement of the beans with the vertical text.

The second cover uses the image as the primary focus rather than the text. Relating to The Next Green Revolution, scientists and GMO's. I would really like to use the blue color of the gloves in this photo but was having a difficult time with the extremely low quality image. If I were to pursue this cover, after receiving the high quality version, the blue color may be interesting to introduce further into the text.

The thirds cover sits in between the first two as the photo and the text seem to fall into the same area of dominance. I grabbed the orange color of the orange and used it with the text to create unity. The masthead is left white so that it does not get lost in the rather busy photograph.

Cover Page Layouts—ex. 3

Target audience for the magazine: Well educated adults aged 25–45 interested in learning about the world, actively engaged in making a difference in their lives, and curious.

I noticed an insect theme in the articles that I chose and really wanted to incorporate them into my covers but in a way which would invite the reader, rather than disgust/scare them away when they would see it. I chose a close up photograph of a fly which I found very interesting and absorbing and for the second cover, broke up the image of the grasshopper to create movement around the page.

The logo is a rounded sans-serif cut up in an interesting pattern to reveal some negative space and movement representing the future. I enjoyed using very different layouts and played around with typography, overprint, and full sized images vs. cropped.

Matt's Exercise 3

Hello,
For this week, the primary initiative for the Publication Design class was to explore vast, aesthetic possibilities for the cover of our final project! Before working on this exercise, I felt hesitant because for someone with a passion for branding, I wanted to build an identity for the magazine I'm designing for, but through building all of the letter forms on Illustrator! Instead, I was encouraged from the instructor to experiment with typefaces and to make small, creative adjustments on them to build the logo for the final project!

Overall, this has been my favorite exercise because well…it's the cover, meaning that aesthetics REALLY matter! With that in mind, I jotted some illustrative inspiration from such magazines, especially WIRED!

Here's a brief description for each:

1. POLYGONS - I was astonished, based on some illustrations I saw for some small, indie magazines, of this style, so I thought this would be fun to experiment with! The point of this cover is actually that the polygons resemble the future, and they build a bitten apple! If you notice, I used a different title for this magazine as I was considering changing the magazine's name to Fresco (fresh in Italian) to connect deeply to my audience! To me, it has to do with my target audience to provide a 'fresh perspective' on food and culture!

2. GREEN POWER - For this, I wanted the cover to feel like something that's home grown or home made! To give it an organic essence, I applied a logotype (Lust Script), that reminded me of a handwritten sign, and a fist covered in grass that resembles a revolution in agriculture - what the article is about! The symbol was based on political movements such as Occupy Wall Street! I did this to grab the reader's attention on such issues like the Monsanto incidents.

3. "HEALTHY' PAC-MAN - Favorite one to work with personally! It's illustrating PAC MAN who's fleeing away from a ghost, which resembles an infamous fast-food restaurant, known for its artificial ingredients and animal abuse! As you can see, the yellow monster is also going after one of the healthiest foods to eat, which is discussed in the article, broccoli! For this design, I decided to use a 'more decorative' typeface for this cover even though it will use something 'less-decorative' throughout the magazine! You'll also notice the composition is very pixellated and shiny for a nostalgic appearance (as if it's 1980)!

Cover

For this weeks assignment we had to design a cover. I honestly had a little trouble with it. I think my first two work the best. My target audience is adults in their mid twenties to late thirties. I look forward to feed back.

Exercise 2 rework

Here is my reworked version, I attached my previous as well to compare! Huge differences. The one with blue on the right is my first try.

I'm using a 7 column grid and I am targeting forward thinking young/middler age people who are interested in learning more about the food industry an the future of food!

Redo_Exercise 2

I ended up choosing different elements from the 3 spreads that I previously had done and wanted to show more color and imagery. I also was able to use the whole article.
