Cover Designs

Here are my designs. I tried to use foods that were not so average and recognizable to people. I thought images of food on the white background would help highlight it and immediately show the audience what the magazine is about even if they take a glance at it.

I tried to keep the colors consistent as well as the typefaces with the layouts I've been creating.

  1. I really like your covers they show the freshness and the healthy side of food. I also enjoyed the colors and the fresh look you brought to this assignment. I would recommend using better typography to show more expression to the design.

  2. I think your cover design B is your strongest out of the three. The plate of food being the focal point makes you want to see what the magazine is actually talking about; it draws you to the text. The different weights used in the cutlines are also executed well to emphasize the main message of the article.

  3. I agree with Carissa, that B is the one you might want to consider moving forward with.

They all have something interesting about them, but the reason I feel this way about B is your masthead. I think your design is more successful as white glyphs on a color field rather than a 2 color solution. In fact, I think every time this masthead is used, it should sit as white letters in a rectangle of orange (or whatever color you settle on). It's quite successful with its clever letter replacement.

Colors - orange and blue and pea green. Bright orange and bright blue are complimentary colors... and something not particularly unusual. In fact, orange is the color retailers use because no one objects too strenuously to it... although no one really loves it either. It's a color that is about "one size fits all"... and I bet you can come up with something more unique than that.

Also - I have to question this big bowl of bean sprouts. No one in their right mind would think this was beautiful, or appetizing. Or I might be reacting to the overall color palette here. This organic, muted and "pea" green color just has no place with the other colors in my opinion.

Consider replacing this image, or working on it in photoshop to recolor some of the beans... if there were a bowl of bean sprouts that looked like a bowl of Fruit Loops that might be interesting. The concept of a bowl of multi-colored bean sprouts might be seen as a metaphor for the DNA manipulations happening in agriculture these days.

Both of your other images are round as well... so either one of them could also work here.

    Nice typographic work!
