My magazine's target audience is trendy younger adults between 21-30 interested in our environment and what we are doing to sustain and advance it. I wanted it to be fun and interesting when designing the logo. Something that could work with the audience, but keep with the idea of the magazine which is focused on the environment. I imagine a college kid, going to school in the city and maybe being a little bit of a hipster. So I thought about this when choosing type, colors and images. I kept the issue title large and white to make that first within the hierarchy of each design.
I enjoy all of these designs, but I really like the first one. For the second one the text gets lost a little in the ground, maybe try using the green oval to bring those out more? Just an idea.
ReplyDeleteReally good job! I really enjoyed how you did the logo for the magazine shows what the magazine is all about. I also liked the graphics and the layout of the covers. I would recommend trying different colors for the article tittles, to show more depth. Overall great job!
ReplyDeleteRuby - you have some good cover images, especially the 2nd and 3rd, in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteIn fact, as I look at the 3rd image, with the fingers dropping bits of greenery, I see a chance for you to be clever. If the theme title was placed carefully, it could sit on both sides of this "dropping motion" bisecting the title thus: The Future (space with lettuce dropping) of Food.
Theme title: I understand the position and size of "The", but wonder if "of" is too small? Maybe it should be similar to other larger letters?
Masthead: it looks like it is your intention to pull apart this word into 4 separate sections: H-ab-it-at. Between the kerning issues and the color break you have succeeded. But what is the concept here? I encourage you to rethink the font and color break - to find a contemporary, young font that is still well-designed and kerned. Not sure this type design accomplishes what you intend.
Placement of masthead - Because this magazine might need to sit in a rack someday, the masthead must sit within the top 3rd of the cover. If it was only subscription there is less pressure to do this... but you look like you are designing a magazine that would be available for sale this way... so let's keep the masthead at the top. Rethink it to fit in a way that does not cover over the hand too much... which might mean it needs to be small-ish in size, but bold in weight and color.
All these comments were made with the 3rd design in mind - however if you are intending to move forward with the 2nd design, please know that my masthead feedback would have remained the same.
