Department Pages Design

This week Homework assignment was to create a department page of an magazine using three different grid. Truly i think this was fun, because i don't enjoy using grid, but at the same time i think is use full to maintain order and structure.

Design 1 was the three column grid I called it the Morning Report. I created and Eye staring to left side just to signal the readers that were all the info starts. I add a good image of a futuristic farm, just to follow the content. Finally i too the color from the images it they are not my favorite but it make the page unique.

Design 2 it was a four even column grid. I enjoy this gird because you can use a little bit of design with out breaking the grid. I experimented with the orange color to see if the page stand out and i believe it does because it make the subhead stand out and also make the information look clean and presentable.

Design 3 with had to create our own grid and i did a five column grid just to stretch the text, because it was a full amount of text to use in one page. Again i went to with the bright orange, but this time was because it look good with the images and also i thought the orange color represent a food magazine very well. I took the green form the keewee fruit just to add some balance. Finally i got inspire from a magazine that i brought in to class that had the images placement like i have in design 3, but they were using a three column grid truly i think mine its better because i added the green element to the page with hold the headline on top so it look like is not hanging on a negative space.

If i was to choice one i pick design 3 just because is more of what i am looking for when i design the final magazine. It just look nice and clean

IL Magazine

This week would like present a very creative magazine covers for IL Magazine by Francesco Franchi, who has been the creative director at IL since 2008. IL- Intelligence in lifestyle' is high-end magazine, gear toward ment, but it also read by women.

I really enjoy this cover, because the layout really targets the specific audience which is men. Also I do not mind the negative space, because is so strong in a good way, that allows  the images capture the reader interest right away without saying many words. Finally i really enjoy the blocky shape, they are a real essential of what make this cover work.

Ilustration

I wanted to show this illustration by Alan Fletcher from his 2001 book called The Art of looking Sideways. In my opinion is very elegant way of stating a hidden message through graphic design. This illustration expands my creativity and inspiration.

Typography Logo

The picture above is a logo design I found interesting. using an illustration for one of the letters was an interesting approach. Not only that, but the design overall is simple just the right amount of detail.

No Plastic Sleeves Blog

Hi guys, I'm sure some of you are familiar with this book if you were in one of Coni's classes previously, but I have been following their blog and find it to be really helpful and inspiring in itself with all the ideas it gives you. I find myself going there when I need some creative inspiration on a project! I think its a really useful resource.

Such Inspiration (Wes Richardson)

I stumbled upon Wes Richardson on night while surf the web. Turns out, he produced several music videos for artists that I avidly follow.  I am a really big fan of his use of typography and flat design in animation. You may have seen some of his work on TV. Although his work is very commercial, it's still very artistic and expressive.  Take the time to go through his online portfolio. He has a very entertaining video reel of his most recent work.

I was just blogged about!

I have an outdoor installation up behind the MFA right now which is part of a group show called "Crossroads." The author of this blog just contacted me to let me know he's included my work in his blog. Blogging is taking over the world (grin):

Here are a few of my own pix of the piece:

Ellen Lupton @ BU TONIGHT!

Tonight at 6:30pm, author of the 'monster' bestseller known as Thinking with Type, Ellen Lupton, will be lecturing at Boston University's Jacob Sleeper Auditorium! This is defiantly an amazing opportunity to network with someone who's a 'rockstar' in the typography industry! I highly encourage everyone in Publication Design to check it out, and admission is $10 for students so don't forget your ID!

For those who don't know Ellen Lupton (although I'm sure many from NEiA do because most of you were likely assigned with her type book in your typography courses!), Lupton is an American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) Gold Medal winner in 2007! Aside from being an author who primarily writes about design, Lupton is also the curator of contemporary design at Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York as well as the director of the Graphic Design program at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore.

Below I posted this inspiring lecture from 2009, where she lectures how designers are playing a major role in publication as authors! I think it's very relevant to the subjects we'll be learning and discussing throughout class as we'll be playing the role as 'both' for our final project!

After watching the lecture, be sure to take a visit to the NEiA Library (located near the Brookline Village Station where there are outdoor tables) to see if you can get your hands on 'several' of Ellen's books! They're fun to read and are very inspiring!

You can also purchase tickets for the events through the Eventbrite app for iOS & Android!

I recently came across Anthony Lane while browsing designspiration.net. He completes many of these pieces, "A hopefully daily series of quick works exploring layout, color, texture and geometry." This is my personally favorite in which he uses "Geometric shapes and space to evoke a sense of balance and tension." Interpretation is subjective but this portrays tension extremely well for me. This is a really good example of how powerful simple geometric shapes can be (less is more).

The Art and Inspiration of Erik Johannson

Erik Johannson is one of my favorite Photoshop artist for inspiration.  He was invited by Adobe to present the Adobe MAX 2003 session and has also been invited speak on TED talks.  Additional images and information can be found at the following web addresses:

Make Good Art!

This is my favourite go–to for inspiration. A commencement speech by Neil Gaiman to University of the Arts 2012. (around 20 minutes long but definitely worth it)

"When things get tough, this is what you should do: Make good art. I’m serious. Husband runs off with a politician — make good art. Leg crushed and then eaten by a mutated boa constrictor — make good art. IRS on your trail — make good art. Cat exploded — make good art. Someone on the Internet thinks what you’re doing is stupid or evil or it’s all been done before — make good art. Probably things will work out somehow, eventually time will take the sting away, and that doesn’t even matter. Do what only you can do best: Make good art. Make it on the bad days, make it on the good days, too."

His speech was later turned into a book art directed by renowned book designer Chip Kidd. (definitely worth checking out as well!)

Its not an image but man is it inspirational!!

Hey guys this is something I stumbled across recently and find myself watching it almost daily while I take care of my daily tasks. It's always good to find inspiration from those who you admire or adore, its great when it's unexpected and personal. I watched this guy growing up as I'm sure most of you have! Please enjoy it!
