Department Pages Design

This week Homework assignment was to create a department page of an magazine using three different grid. Truly i think this was fun, because i don't enjoy using grid, but at the same time i think is use full to maintain order and structure.

Design 1 was the three column grid I called it the Morning Report. I created and Eye staring to left side just to signal the readers that were all the info starts. I add a good image of a futuristic farm, just to follow the content. Finally i too the color from the images it they are not my favorite but it make the page unique.

Design 2 it was a four even column grid. I enjoy this gird because you can use a little bit of design with out breaking the grid. I experimented with the orange color to see if the page stand out and i believe it does because it make the subhead stand out and also make the information look clean and presentable.

Design 3 with had to create our own grid and i did a five column grid just to stretch the text, because it was a full amount of text to use in one page. Again i went to with the bright orange, but this time was because it look good with the images and also i thought the orange color represent a food magazine very well. I took the green form the keewee fruit just to add some balance. Finally i got inspire from a magazine that i brought in to class that had the images placement like i have in design 3, but they were using a three column grid truly i think mine its better because i added the green element to the page with hold the headline on top so it look like is not hanging on a negative space.

If i was to choice one i pick design 3 just because is more of what i am looking for when i design the final magazine. It just look nice and clean

  1. Jose - all versions have something to offer, and each one shows a unique approach to the content - GREAT!

Page 1 is well-balanced, with the use of the serif font for your heading and the limited, monochromatic color palette, this page seems to take the most serious approach to the subject of all the pages designs.

Page 2 seems a bit more contemporary, in color use and neg space design - however the neg shapes you have incorporated in the composition seem to unbalance the page... which means you probably need to incorporate more spaces, with an eye to balance. You will need to cut type in the bottom columns to facilitate more white space/shapes. It's a bit dense down there, so think about where you might be able to allow more neg space to compliment the sections of type and give our eyes a rest from the density of the text columns - as you have in the top of the page.

Page 3 starts with a great design at the top, and your addition of the green shape that pulls our eye over to the FoodNews (no apostrophe needed) is very strong. The issue I see with this design is that the use of equal width columns (5 of them) does not leave enough margin around the page... you are too close to all edges. So... you need to consider experimenting with uneven columns. You can still have 5, if some of them are thinner. Then, you can decide to incorporate column quotes, or captions, or some small amount of type there... or even thin slices of images. I can see how a 5 uneven column grid could encourage you to add other elements to the page... lightening it up a bit. Again, feel free to cut type where needed. If this is the design you are interested in continuing to work with (and I encourage you to do so), the margins must be enlarged so the page does not seem overly full and cramped.

  2. Hey Jose, great job on all the layouts. I agree with Coni that the last feels a bit cramped with the 5 columns and margins... I too used 5 columns but only utilized all of them on the bottom half of the page and cut some text!

I do really like the last layout but I do find myself getting trapped in the triangles created under the photos, above the bodies of type. Maybe a little more breathing room would make it not so much of an enclosed shape?

I think using the orange bars to separate the categories works well, and I think the colors and photos are unified.

  3. i agree with both of the comments above but for the first one i would also try to use a different color other then gray for boxes going across the image and page
