Table of Contents - WIP

Hello everyone,
I hope everyone had a delicious and wonderful thanksgiving holiday! This week without class in session, I worked on my table of contents page, which occupies two pages. I proposed to do this because I felt that it an imperative elements as it's building a 'map' of your publication. Like the web, people need to know their way around the magazine without any 'critical' thought! My design involved several illustrations, but also several wonderful ideas that had to be scrapped prior to time, its relevance to the information or my audience and to provide real estate to 'calm the reader's vision'! This page helped me visualize images my audience is likely to consider! Remember, this is 'just' a draft, so some elements will likely receive major improvements!

Tell me what you think?

  1. Matt - like your general approach, and most of the icons are quite nice (especially Prince Charles). The layout could be a bit more involved, so I'm hoping you find a way to include some photos from the articles as well - think about running a rhythmic series of images along the bottom of both pages?

How Our Eating Habits Will Change: Heading needs to be designed in keeping with the other headings here, and I encourage you to redesign the icon. It's too complicated - I assume I am looking at asparagus in the shape of an H (not sure why though)... so instead, draw just 1 or 2 asparagus heads, with those fascinating shapes that we will recognize immediately as that veggie.

Be careful of the gutter - it looks like the S in Contents might be sitting in the fold.

    Great beginning!

  2. I agree with Coni, I really like the approach and can see how much time you put into creating the icons. I like the negative space but it does feel just a bit too empty... I initially had the problem as well. Adding some more graphics would defintelty help or maybe having the curve come up form the lower left corner, give you a little more room for the word "Contents"
