exercise 3_Jose Gonzalez

This week we exercise assignment was to create magazine covers.

My first the design I wanted to experiment with placement of the text and half cut out of and image. I use this image because i wanted to follow the content"The future of Farming".I also took a beautiful background color from the image which i think make the text and image pop more.

My second design i wanted to create something modern but also symbolize  my target audience.I use this beautiful image of vegetables and with a good  placement of the logo and content i think i have achieved that.I also use wanted to experiment with the  text so i found this unique brush stroke text and wrote "The things man eat" to draw in the target audience.

My final design i use two very unique images to make an illusion to drawing the target audience. I place the logo in clearspace so people can read it and i also did the content in clear space. All i wanted to do with this design is to experiment with the images to see if it could reach the target audience by using just the image and clearspace.

  1. Jose - you are working on a magazine that encourages men to cook... normal, everyday youngish men. Right? So... they aren't farmers, and they aren't professional cooks. The cover image must speak directly to your target audience and give the reader a sense of what is inside the magazine. So... I think the middle cover design is the only one that does that - and does it well. I'll restrict my thoughts to that version:

What this "note" says will be very important. And it isn't grammatically correct at the moment - It could say something like:

    What Things Men Eat
    How Men Will Cook
    What Food Men Cook

Maybe other students have some suggestions?

I question the white box in lower right... you have a visual concept that centers around an informal kitchen list with handwriting. Maybe you could integrate some of the article headings as if they were also written on this note paper? What your target audience might write themselves as they generate a list that would represent the contents of this issue.

Are there other foods that could be added to the image... like foods we don't think of cooking with... yet.

Nice work - this cover has good possibilities.

  2. Thank you for your critique coni, I also like the middle one, but i was struggling to come with a note the capture the readers and i think i could also put some sort of meat in the image like for example a steak or bacons

    1. Jose - I think you should add some of the foods mentioned in the department articles... like algae, insects, etc... some foods that tie into the content and the Future of Food.

  3. Jose you did a pretty good job! I like how your portraying food in a very fun specially with the typeface you chose in the second spread, very expressive and shows the perfect mood for your articles. Keep up the good work.

  4. i like the one with the white background and the food placed around it i feel like changing the font or maybe lining them up a little differently would make it much stronger. i also enjoy the last one with the cooks in the kitchen but the top right typeface gets lost with the filter. and the first one you have here i feel like the fact that the font is pushed to the left outside of the image box it makes it look a little weird maybe work on that a little more try moving it a bit more to the right

  5. definitely the second one! Looking back at the exercises you posted I think the second ties in with them the most. Maybe instead of the boxes in the corners you can have bars running across, they could still be white but maybe lower the opacity a bit... that my cause for you to want to lose the white border around it however.

    Optional names could be:

Feeding Mankind (a little play on words)
    What a real man eats
    Manly munchies
