Using the 3 column grid, I created a layout that would be within a department, not necessarily the front page. I find that finding that uniform for a your departments is harder than designing a starting page. Although it is not as fun, I wanted to really use the grids. I also wanted to use the color green to evoke the feeling of the fact that we are talking about living things within the "science" of living things and food so I just played with different textures and shapes to still keep it food and science related.

  1. Ruby - it's interesting to me that you think that the following pages of a department would be harder to design than the first page. I disagree really - and challenge you to prove your statement (grin).

Your department title "Science" is a good one.

Meanwhile, these pages are pretty dense... even for people who enjoy scientific articles (is this your audience?). And I wonder if you know that I've given you too much copy to use on purpose... expecting you to cut where needed. I encourage you to cut type, include more neg space and images that will add interest to the page and visually "show" us some of these content. OR, use what I see here, but add the first department page layout so you actually have double the amount of room to work with the same amount of text.

Of the 3 designs, and because it has a lighter tone with more negative space, I think that Grid B, with the angles, is certainly the most interesting. I encourage you, now, to design the first page of this department for the next step here. Feel free to include a second page as well... but for sure build the 1st page.
