Departments

For this exercise I chose to really use the grid. For grid a I used lines to direct the readers eye around the page. I also used earthy colors to represent farms. For grid b I chose to use a lot of white space to balance out the page. For grid c I used five columns so I had a little bit more of a choose. I used a triangular shape to bring visual interest to the page.

  1. I really like the the placement of small images that combine to a single column. A nice touch of page number on the bottom right.

  2. Brianna - in all the layouts you show an awareness of different conceptual approaches - good! Some thoughts:

Grid A - I see some inventive use of call outs (remember what that means?) that tie the heading to the subheadings. The use of these would be more successful if you increase the column gutters on the page... because your middle column seems to bump up against the left and right columns too closely - not enough negative space for the call outs for this column to sit. Revisit your margins and column gutters to adjust for these call outs in the middle of the page. Also - I see quite a bit of extra neg space in the tinted text frame, on the right of "The Future of Farms" section. Some of this space could/should be used between columns.

Grid B - General approach could be successful, but because the image doesn't really seem to relate to the content (does it?) and there are some "crashes" happening on this page, it isn't as successful as the other 2 layouts.

Grid C - This is quite a successful layout, with the triangle shaped image backing up your heading. I would image that this layout approach would be used for all the Departments in the magazine - nice. The staggered columns of text work really well, and all your images create a lovely color palette. I wonder if you can find a solution to the way the heading "Underused and Overlooked" sits... it isn't a great shape on the page at this point, with awkward breaks. Give that some thought. Also - you might want to attend to the subheadings under your second section "Future Frontiers" to emphasize them a bit, mostly to add visual interest. Very nice beginning.
